18:00
‘Zen!’ I hear Koko calling my name.
I put my phone down and rush out to meet her, she had gone out earlier in the day and this is her coming back.
‘Welcome back Koko,’ I smile getting her bag from her.
‘You have already locked the shop,’ she asks
‘Yes, it wasn’t too busy today so I decided to lock up early.’
‘Okay.’
‘How was your day?’ I ask as we walk back to the living room.
‘My day was okay,’ she says as she takes a seat. ‘How was yours?’
‘Mine was okay too just boring.’
‘Where is Naomi?’
‘In her room I guess.’
‘So,’ she smiles
‘What?’
‘I go you something.’
‘What?’
She opens her bag and removes a plastic.
‘Here,’ she says.
I check the contents of the plastic there is a small box in,side.
‘Koko,’ I scre-m
‘All yours,’ she smiles
I open the small box, in,side is a Tecno L 9 plus, champagne Gold in colour.
‘Awwww,’ I scre-m again, ‘Koko you didn’t.’
‘I didn’t get you anything for your birthday, so happy belated birthday Zen.’
I jump up and down in excitement before I wrap my hands around her.
‘Koko thank you very much.’
‘Steve sent me some money yesterday I thought what better way to spend it than to get you a new phone.’
Steve is Koko’s only son he works as an Immigration officer in Eastern Province he sends Koko money once in a while though he rarely visits us.
Unlike my auntie’s, Steve never calls me ugly though we never see eye to eye, it’s like the mare sight of me infuriates him.
Koko says it was like this with him and Viola, they hated each other with a passion, I bet if Steve knew Koko used his money to get me a phone, he would stop sending her money.
‘I don’t know how to thank you Koko, this is the best thing anyone has ever done for me.’
‘I see how you struggle with that old phone of yours that has no cover it’s time we upgraded to something fancier.’
‘You are simply the best Koko.’
I sit down next to her as I open my new phone, I am overwhelmed with joy, all of a sudden, a tear slides down my cheek, what kind of selfless love is this how can I ever thank this woman for always putting my needs before hers.
She looks at me and frowns, ‘I didn’t say you start crying Zen.’
‘I can’t help it Koko,’ I sniff.
She wipes the tears off my face with the palm of her hand then she pulls me to her and embraces me, ‘I would give you the world if I could Zen.’
Her words melt my heart and more tears flow.
‘Shhhhh,’ she pats my back gently with her hand.
Auntie Naomi interrupts our moment a few minutes later.
‘I heard someone scre-ming,’ she yawns, ‘what’s going on?’
‘Evening Naomi,’ Koko greets her.
‘Evening mother, you are back?’
‘Yes.’
She sits on the couch across from us.
‘So what’s going on here,’ she asks again.
‘Koko just bought me a new phone,’ I say excitedly
Auntie Naomi looks at me with a sour look, ‘She bought you a phone.’
‘Yes.’ I nod my head.
She looks at the phone in my hands then she picks up the box from the table, I can see the anger in her eyes, it’s as if she wants to explode.
‘Why are you wasting money like this?’ She angrily asks Koko.
‘I just got my grandchild a phone, how is that wasting money?’
‘Steve obviously sent you money to spend on your medicine and you decided to spend it on her,’ she points an accusing finger at me.
I shift uncomfortably in my seat.
Koko responds with silence, she is obviously irritated.
‘This is the reason I never send money to you.’
‘I had a busy day Naomi I would appreciate if you just allowed me to enjoy some quietness in my own house.’
‘What would Steve do if he found out you bought Zendaya a phone using his money? This girl is not your responsibility Mother,’ she says in a raised voice.
‘What exactly is your problem Naomi, why are you so bitter towards your sister’s child?’
Naomi laughs, ‘We both know the only sister I have is Jenny.’
‘Viola is your sister too.’
‘I know no woman by the name Viola,’ she yells
‘Whatever issues you had with Viola please don’t involve Zen this child is your child too, all these hateful words you spit out don’t reflect badly on her or Viola, they reflect badly on you, why should you be angry at someone who hasn’t been in the picture the past twenty years, Viola could be dead even.’
My heart beats faster than normal, when Koko mentions the possibility of Viola being dead it’s not something I have thought about over the years, I have always been hopeful of her return I need to hear her reasons for leaving.
She laughs, ‘I hope she is really dead mum.’
Koko shakes her head,’ you need to get rid of that bitterness, it is slowly destroying you, I bet this is the same reason your husband sent you packing.’
‘You always favored Viola mother, she was your special child.’
‘I love all my children the same, I treated you equally.’
She lets out a mocking laugh, ‘We both know you are lying, you treated Viola better than any of us, you showered her with so much love it made all of us feel like we were adopted, Viola was the center of your world mother. We all thought you would treat us better after she left but we were so wrong because Zen came into the picture and boom we were all second best again.’
‘Who is we?’ Koko asks softly.
‘Me, Jenny, Steve & Sarah, didn’t you see none of us got alone with Viola.’
Koko stands up, ‘You are talking nonsense I have heard enough.’
‘I hope Zen leaves you someday just like sweet Viola did,’ she laughs.
Koko gives her an angry look she opens her mouth to respond but closes it at the sound of the knock at the door.
‘I will get that,’ I stand up and rush to the door.
My head is spinning I can’t believe Auntie Naomi hates me because she was jealous of Viola like who does that, isn’t she a little too old to be keeping grudges.
I open the door and find Uncle Carlos standing at the door with Sherister they have two suitcases with them and Sherister looks like she has been crying.
‘Hey,’ Uncle Carlos manages a weak smile.
‘Hey,’ I respond
‘Can we come in,’ he asks
I step aside and allow them in, Uncle Carlos is Auntie Naomi’s husband and Sherister is their only child, she is 19.
I have no idea why are they here with suitcases, I just hope it’s not what I am thinking.

I am going to be back a little while later, Dairy let me get supper ready.
FRIDAY- JANUARY 6, 2017*
– *Diary entry –6*

Dear Diary,

I missed you a wh0le lot diary.
I couldn’t wait to rush up to my room so I could spend some time with you before I retire for bed.
Guess what! Sherister is Pregnant.
Yes you heard me right my dear Auntie’s V-rgin child is four months pregnant, I have been sitting here wondering what or who impregnated that girl because as far as we are all concerned that girl is a V-rgin.
Don’t get it twisted, I am not celebrating this girl’s getting pregnant out of wedlock but I sort of think it serves my auntie right for always bragging about how decent her daughter is unlike some of us.
So my uncle was very upset when he came over that Wednesday night, he could barely sit down, he told my auntie he wanted nothing to do with her and her daughter, according to him they are birds of the same feathers.
I didn’t mean to eaves drop on their conversation but I was surprised to find out that my auntie cheated on her husband with one of his colleagues, apparently he caught them red handed in a hotel after someone tipped him off and that’s the reason he sent her packing.
My uncle has since filed for a divorce, I tell you my auntie is a mess right now, she hasn’t stopped crying, Koko hasn’t spoke a word to her since Wednesday and auntie Jenny is here too, she came yesterday talk of moral support.
You know what diary I think the bad we do eventually catches up with us in the end, I feel sorry for my auntie though I think she deserves what’s happening to her. She thought she was on top of the world see how life is humbling her right now.
Anyway that aside, something interesting happened today.
So this afternoon, Koko sent me to the Mall and as you know I hate going to the mall but I couldn’t say no to Koko, I just had to drag myself there.
I wore a blue off the shoulder dress I bought this dress just a few weeks ago. It’s a very nice dress though it would look nice on someone like Sherister. Speaking of Sherister, lord this girl is beautiful, I would seriously do anything to look a little bit like her but we both know that’s a farfetched dream.
So I walked to the mall, normally I wouldn’t spend more than thirty minutes at the mall but this time around I decided to explore a little bit, being at a noisy mall was better than being at home with the crazy sisters.
I walked around for a while before I s₱0tted this new ice cream shop.
I walked into the shop and bought myself some ice cream then I found myself an empty seat, sat down and started licking at my ice cream.
‘Is this seat taken,’ a voice woke me from my reverie
I had been enjoying my ice cream peacefully I had even forgotten I was at the mall.
I looked up and my eyes found the gaze of a very fine gentle man, he was smiling at me, I had to blink twice just to be sure his smile was directed at me.
‘Is this seat taken?’ He asked again
‘No,’ I shook my head.
‘Great,’ he pulled a chair back and sat down.
I looked up at him again just to be sure he was real and I wasn’t just hallucinating. Diary I swear some people were wonderfully created this guy was fire, he was slightly tall, dark in complexion, he had a straight nose, a small sharp chin and his l-ips were slightly full, for a minute there I wondered how the feel of his l-ips would feel on mine, don’t get me wrong I don’t go around fantasizing about men but it’s not every day that a handsome dude gets to sit in front of you.
There are so many seats around but he choose mine, isn’t that exciting though.
Lord did I talk about his cologne, it was intoxicating, I just wanted to seat there and smell him given a chance I would even eat him, dah I know I am being petty but I can’t help it, seems my emotions are just all over the place.
‘Enjoying your ice cream?’ He asked after a while
I couldn’t respond it felt like my voice was caught up in my throat, I was even feeling a swimming s-nsation in my stomach.
‘You are okay?’ He shook me
‘For a minute there I thought you had passed out,’ he laughed
‘Sorry.’
‘So you are enjoying your ice cream?’
‘Yes,’ I shook my head
I was nervous as hell, I rarely talk to the people I know yet I found myself responding to this stranger.
‘I am Elijah,’ he said
‘Zendaya’ I responded.
‘You often come to this place?’
‘Nop.’
‘You are new here?’
‘No,’ I shook my head, ‘I just don’t come to this mall often.’
‘I see.’
An awkward silence filled the air.
‘And do you come here often?’ Elijah asked
He laughed, ‘No, I am actually visiting this mall for the first time.’
‘Oh.’
‘I actually don’t stay here I am just visiting my auntie for a few days.’
‘I see.’
‘Yes.’
After I finished with my ice cream, I stood up and said bye to Elijah, I was hoping he would ask for my number like they usually do in movies but he didn’t, I waved him goodbye and walked out disappointedly.
Then I bought Koko’s things and headed back home.
Can you imagine I haven’t stopped thinking about Elijah since afternoon, I have even thought of the possibility of dating him but that too is a farfetched dream, men like Elijah don’t date girls like me.
I am dozing dairy I will come back in the morning.
Thank you for always listening to my drama.
